CHAPTER SEVEN

AYLA

I stared numbly at my mug of tea, willing someone, anyone, to walk through Pie Hard’s doors. After the whirlwind opening and steady interest, my client base had shrunk to a trickle.

The snow, I tried to reason. People didn’t venture out in the snow unless it was absolutely necessary. And there wasn’t exactly a mob of people who lived in Crescent Hollow year-round. Most were seasonal visitors, people who flocked here to experience the wonder of the Colorado wilderness once all the fancier tourist towns booked up.

Deep in my heart, I knew Jackson hadn’t been the only one of my customers to receive orders.

Fucking Declan. I’d never exchanged words with the man, but I loathed him.

And yes, that was absolutely because of my hurt over Jackson, but that changed nothing. He was an asshole who ruined lives and thought it was acceptable to issue commands without ever considering the consequences of his orders.

I couldn’t stand it. My heart stung as I reached for my mug and took a sip, letting the liquid burn all the way down. My body ached in new places, delicious twinges reminding me of the night before. My blood simmered in my veins, thinking about the things we’d done. The way Jackson had taken control, the way he’d cared for me afterward.

And then it was all gone. Over. Done. Because of wolves didn’t get attached to humans.

They didn’t buy baked goods from them either, it seemed. Fucker.

The door opened, a frigid blast of wind following in its wake. I started, setting my mug on the countertop before anything sloshed over the sides.

Dahlia swept inside, closing the door with an energetic shove. Snow dusted her coat, and ice crystals sparkled in her hair. She took off her gloves and stuffed them in her pocket, her beaming smile fading as she approached the counter. “Where the hell is everyone? I was expecting to elbow my way to the front of the line!”

I winced, staring at my hands. “Well...”

She eyed me as she leaned a hip against the counter. “Okay. Who do you need me to murder?”

“What?”

“I haven’t seen you look so grim since... actually, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you look this sad. Who do you need me to kill?”

I sighed heavily, weighing my words. I understood the pack had to keep their secrets, but that didn’t mean I had to like it. Jackson, Declan, whoever... they’d all made a mistake. No one was stronger apart, and forbidding shifters and humans just felt like cruelty.

“Have you heard anything about me?” I asked carefully. “About... Jackson? And me?”

Dahlia blinked, mouth dropping open. “Oh.”

“Yeah. Oh.”

She pulled out a stool along the counter and sat with a heavy thud. “You guys... You guys really hit it off, huh?”

“Since I first visited.” I planted my face in my hands and unleashed a flood of hurt. “And every trip since. He’s hot as fuck and wanted to keep things casual, which suited me just fine. I didn’t expect to ever want more.
